Valentine's day in my opinion is one of the most over produced holidays throughout the year. We see all these commercials weeks in advance that we need to treat our significant other very special on this particular day. The guys are supposed to over due it on this day by getting flowers, chocolates and other extra gifts like jewelry just to impress their girlfriend or wife. Why do we treat Valentine's Day different then any other day? If you really love somebody then you should be able to show them how you feel everyday. Also, you shouldn't have to buy expensive gifts just to show your feelings for someone. If you really love somebody then being there for that person is all that really matters.
There is one exception to all this and it is 17-year old Student Hayden Godfrey who goes to Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. On Thursday he passed out carnations to every girl at his school which came out to 834 in total. I thought this was a really cool thing to do because he is treating every girl the same and he is doing it to spread love on Valentine's Day. A lot of young men at the age of 17 are still not completely mature and they don't know how to handle themselves on this holiday so they act out for attention. Godfrey started this cool project when he was a freshman, which started with sending flowers to 30 girls. Hayden went on to say, "I thought as many people as possible should be happy on Valentine's Day." This is a great gesture and spreading the positive vibes making everybody happy and forget if they are single or not. This holiday spotlights being in a relationships and I think that is wrong because not everybody is so lucky to find that special someone their lives. I have to give People Magazine credit for doing a story on this because this would of slipped through the cracks without anybody seeing this. ABC news reached out to Godfrey's girlfriend Lilyan Sharp for comment and she mentioned that it was a "very special" gesture. "I, myself, spent a lot of Valentine's Days not receiving anything," she said. "I know how it feels." We need to see more acts of kindness like this especially from the younger generations. In the long run everybody deserves to be loved regardless if it is a relationship with a significant other, family or even friends and we shouldn't need produced holiday's just to show that love.
